Fact Programs

FACT offers or is involved in a variety of programs that supports the local community and help ferrets nationally.

Ferret Shelter FACT operates one of the only free-standing ferret shelters in the country. Between 1992 and January, 2002, over 750 homeless ferrets have come through our doors. This does not include the countless numbers placed in new homes through our Placement Counseling service.
Placement Counseling A guiding FACT principal is that owners should maintain responsibility for placing their pet should circumstances arise where they can no longer keep them. FACT counsels owners in two ways:

  • Helping resolve problems that may be causing the owner to place their pet; and,

  • Providing guidance in how they can responsibly place their pet.

FACT maintains the shelter as a safe-haven of last resort. This policy allows us to maintain space for animals with no other options.

Foster Program Some ferrets arrive at FACT because of behavioral issues, illness or because they have just grown old and are unwanted. It is our policy to place animals responsibly with those best suited to provide appropriate care and training, if needed.

The shelter environment can never replace a home. Therefore, FACT maintains a network of permanent foster homes with loving, experienced ferret owners to care for the special needs ferrets.

Seminars FACT has developed a curriculum of in-depth ferret training classes aimed at new and experienced ferret owners. A class can also be developed for the staff of general animal shleters.
Ferret & Other Events Each year FACT participates in a number of regional fun events and expositions sponsored by other ferret shelters in the Northeast to help support their growth and expansion of their ferret welfare mission.
